Escaping the problems using a wormhole is the plot for many science-fiction movies. How about if you could handle your problems like that? Now wormholes are theoretically possible, but have not been observed in practice. In a figurative sense, though, that’s an approach: looking at the wormhole as the gateway to another dimension – an abstract level – your “here and now” issues will look different. Often the observed phenomenon is just the effect of a very different problem. Only through an abstract view, the true reasons become visible.
A good example of this is a plant for the selective treatment of slag produced in a waste incineration plant. There, a new pulse generator was installed. My job was to do the calibration. The results were inconsistent and at first glance it looked like a defect in the generator, which would have led to a massive temporal shift in commissioning. Now the recorded data has been viewed in its entirety. Then I constructed abstract scenarios and derived their effects – signatures. One of these signatures was found in the data. For verification, I designed and performed additional tests that confirmed my assumptions. An extreme value for a parameter in the process room to which the generator was connected could be identified as the actual cause. With this knowledge, the calibration was successfully completed. Furthermore, it was possible to explain a previously unrecognized behavior of the previously installed generators.
Important for the solution over the abstract space is a great degree of abstraction ability, that is, to filter out the essential from the confusion of information. I was able to prove and “train” my great capacity for abstraction in my broad education as a physicist and during my intensive examination of patents.
